Today Julian Casablancas‘s debut solo album, Phrazes for the Young is now out in stores and on iTunes for only $4.99.

Of course the question is… What do y’all think of it?

Video from last night’s secret show at Spaceland is now up on the YouTube:

Some folks who bought the deluxe edition are reporting difficulties with their digital downloads. Anyone else having these issues?

Today Julian Casablancas, frontman of The Strokes, gave the world a taste of Phrazes for the Young, his upcoming album for Cult Records/RCA.

The trailer (see below), which debuted on Julian’s new solo project website, JulianCasablancas.com, falls within line of the visual style fans of the Strokes will be accustomed to: stock nature footage mixed with obscure patterns inspired by antiquity, all filted through a ’70s and ’80s haze.

Remember hearing about the project that The Strokes‘ frontman Julian Casablancas was working on for the Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse new collaborative album, Dark Night of the Soul? Well it appears as though the song, “Little Girl,” along with the rest of the album was accidentally leaked in an audio stream on the web last night by the UK Chrysalis Music Group’s official blog. Whoops!

Although the album is no longer available to stream, some enterprising young folks were quick to snap up the audio…so get a listen of Julian’s vocals on “Little Girl” right below:

What do you think of the new ditty?

Currently my Gmail account is at 97% full–I know that seems humanly impossible, but it’s true.

So I’m taking some time this weekend to go through and delete some of the old stuff I have on the account, and I came across some things that I thought some of you might enjoy.

Check it out:

If you’ve been anywhere near a TV in the last week, you probably are already aware that SNL‘s Andy Samberg‘s film/comedy group, The Lonely Island, have spawned a new full-length album called Incredibad which dropped today (Feb 10).

However, what you might not have realized is that a very familiar sounding voice is guesting on one song called “Boombox”–that’s right The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas.

Julian teamed up with Andy on the West Coast this summer to do this humorous send up describing the transformation of a stuffy country club, a drab and homeless NYC, and a nursing home into a bumpin’ dancefest at the arrival of a magical boombox.

Has Julian Casablancas been thinking more about pork belly and ribs than he has about music? It’s been reported that Strokes singer is one of the financiers behind new LA eatery, Shin, located on Wilcox Avenue in Hollywood.

Last night there was a big opening bash for the upscale Korean BBQ restaurant where other rumored investors Mark Ronson, Gerard Butler, Danny Masterson, Chris Masterson, Laura Prepon, and DJ Steve Aoki (I know, random!) all attended…but dear Julian or wife Juliet did not appear in any of the paparazzi shots at the event.

Does anyone know if Julian attended…but somehow managed to dodge all the photographers?

UPDATE: M wrote in w/ a picture of Julian at the event from the Cobrasnake. Holy smokes, is everyone that short?!?

Here’s a shot of the restaurant:

Back from My Vacation!

September 29, 2008

in photographs, travel

I took a much-needed vacation last week to Ocean City, Maryland. (I know, not as glamorous as say… the Riviera or Belize… but there was a beach!)

Sure it looks warm but it was freeeeezzziinnnnggg

I got to freeze my buttocks off by the seaside. (Beaches are not perpetually warm… even in September.) I felt the strongest winds of my life, which made the sand feel like a million little tetanus shots pricking my bare legs. The gusts of winds were so strong, that while I was riding a bike down the boardwalk, I went a length of about 30 blocks without pedaling ONCE (I kid you not!).

I saw some *interesting* things when I headed “downtown”…

Perhaps they have these kind of shirts all across beach towns in the US, but all I could say was OMGWTF?

The music video component of the Converse ad campaign song “My Drive Thru” (featuring Pharrell Williams, Julian Casablancas from the Strokes, and rising star Santogold) has finally been revealed:

The video is all in black and white, with the three singers appearing like ripped out paper dolls, that fall, multiply, and zip around the screen.

Again, this song kinda blows, but it’s good to see Julian working on something. Too bad they are not Strokes songs.

Greatest moments of tonight: Seeing Mos Def talk up Clive Davis. David Cross with better seats than Clive Davis. Amanda standing in the back of the pit watching the band. Julian jumping into the audience.
