Quickly, the charity performance of artists who have appeared on Dark Was the Night compilation was at Radio City Music Hall last night. Amidst rumors of Blonde Redhead and Sufjan Stevens playing, neither group/performer got onstage at the event.

The bands who actually did perform were:

Dirty Projectors
My Brightest Diamond
The National
Dave Sitek (from TV on the Radio)
David Byrne
[Intermission]
Bon Iver
Feist
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
[Encore] Tribute to Pete Seeger with all bands (and a random appearance by St. Vincent – aka Annie Clark) singing altogether a song Seeger made famous “This Land Is Your Land,” with Sharon Jones busting out solo into a sassy rendition of the song a quarter of the way through (below).

For me the most impressive performances were mainly from the ladies: My Brightest Diamond blew the crowd away with her rendition of “Feeling Good,” and the performances of the Dirty Projectors and Feist were both incredibly beautiful. However if you asked any of the men in the crowd, it seems as the Boy Boner award went to Bon Iver. David Byrne was also stellar, with a wonderful set in which he performed three songs off of previous Red Hot albums to which he’s contributed.

And even though an alarming number of people left as soon as Feist finished up her set (tsk tsk, how rude!) Sharon Jones definitely brought the house down (and the crowd to its feet) with her spirited performance and dance tribute to Mr. James Brown.

Also spotted in the crowd last night were Chris Tomson, drummer of Vampire Weekend, and artist Cindy Sherman (surely there to support her beau Mr. Byrne).

More: Brooklyn Vegan, Paper Magazine, The Tripwire

The unstoppable Annie Clark (aka – St. Vincent) has just released a new music video for the song “Actor Out of Work” in anticipation of her new album, Actor, which will be released on May 5th:

The sound is a lot more daring and bold than what was on her debut album. As per usual, you can probably expect that when she plays the song live it will sound very different, and more likely than not sound 10x more awesome than it already does.

Can you hear my girl-crushing heart beating?

Tonight, folks who headed down to Castle Clinton in Battery Park were treated to not only beautiful, breezy summer weather, but a glorious set by Brooklyn transplant (and TMA fave) Annie Clarke–aka St. Vincent–as part of the FREE River to River Festival that brings awesome music events to the city each year.

Annie and her 6-piece band hit the stage promptly after 7pm completely decked out in white ensembles. Annie looked adorable in a sleeveless white A-line dress with black detailing and a black belt cinched around the waist. She donned black fishnet stockings (with a huge hole at the back of her left knee), black jazz shoes, and off-white plastic sunglasses.

Annie tried out some new songs, one of which she explained was inspired by all the Prince music she has been listening to recently. (Named “Comp” or “Camp” on the set list.) The song featured a chorus of “Better be moving on…” repeated over and over, and had a very slow, groovy R&B vibe to it. Another new tune, (tentatively referred to as “Trills”) was probably one of the best songs of the night, with a big brass/woodwind sound (french horn, sax, and flute) and a head-bopping drum beat.

Some other random factoids spilled during the set: The first song Anne learned to play on the guitar was “Aqualung” by Jethro Tull (which, if you are familiar with St. Vincent’s blistering guitar sound, TOTALLY makes sense), Annie’s first album, “Marry Me” was named after a famous phrase from the cult American TV show “Arrested Development”, which Annie says she watched obsessively while on tour.

The set list was as follows: Now. Now., Human Racing, Jesus Saves, I Spend, All My Stars Align, I Was the Actor, Underneath the Bed, Marry Me, Landlines, [NEW SONG] “Comp”? “Camp”?, [NEW SONG] “Trills”, Paris Is Burning. ENCORE: Your Lips Are Red
