Against the beautiful backdrop of the waterside beach, the quartet hit the stage after 10pm and played an easy breezy set that pleased the crowd. One special moment was when the band did a cover version of Fleetwood Mac’s awesome song “Dreams.”
As you may have heard, last night Conan O’Brien did an intimate 300-person gig in Nashville, TN at Third Man Records, with Jack White joining in for the encore.
But the BEST part of the night was that the whole thing was being recorded on a reel to reel tape! Why reel to reel? Because tonight’s performance is going to be pressed into a record that people at the show could buy! Say it with me, party people: HOLY CRAP. What that also meant for the show was that halfway through, Conan & the band had to stop for a few minutes so that the reel could be changed! SO COOL.
Even if you weren’t one of the lucky few to get into the gig, you can still get your grubby little hands on a copy of the album, which is currently available for pre-order on the Third Man Records website. ONLY the folks who were at the show will receive the black and blue vinyl version. The album will ship in July.
In addition to the live LP, Third Man has also just announced that O’Brien recorded a spoken word Green Series 7” to be released by Third Man in the near future.
Shot of Conan onstage:
More bits about the show, there were commemorative t-shirts being sold with the Third Man Records logo men sporting swooshy red hairdos (natch) and “CONAN Third Man Records – June 10 2010″ on the back.
The setlist included: “Blue Moon of Kentucky” by Bill Monroe and made popular by Elvis Presley/ “Rock This Town” by the Stray Cats/ “Polk Salad Annie” by Tony Joe White and made popular by Elvis Presley/ “On the Road Again” by Willie Nelson/ “Monkey Business” by Skid Row (?) / “King Creole” by Elvis/ “Seven Nation Army” by White Stripes/ “The Weight” by The Band. ENCORE: “20 Flight Rock” by Eddie Cochran/ “40 Days” / “Creep” by Radiohead
Here’s a clip of Jack intro-ing Conan to the stage:
Hey folks — for those of you who watch some of the first two matches of the World Cup, is it just me or are those damn vuvuzelas (those plastic horns everyone has) making the most AWFUL non-stop buzzing sound throughout the matches?
I know that the horn has a 15-year history as THE defacto noise maker of South Africa, but to the rest of the world it’s the tool that makes the horrible sound of a giant swarm of bees buzzing over and over and over. It’s pretty much the most annoying background sound during a world sporting event. Will FIFA please put an end to the constant honks of the vuvuzelas and ban the damn things from the stadiums from now on?
“I think Julian Casablancas only said they were doing this summer’s festival shows for the money to be provocative. I don’t think these guys do anything for the money.”
Almost a day later, not much information past the my initial posting has surfaced about the gig. By most accounts, the show was totally fantastic and made everyone feel like it was the early 2000s once again. “Venison” t-shirts modeled after the original Strokes logo were sold to concertgoers, antler signs and chants of “Venison” were encouraged by the crowd, and at the end of the show Julian declared, “You guys are the f-cking sh-t!”
Addict Music did reveal the one major bummer about the show — as soon as the show was over a pair of overzealous bouncers rushed the front of the crowd and actually took their fists to the faces of members of the crowd in an effort to keep people from jumping onto the stage, even TKO-ing a couple punters in the process. Ouch!
As y’all probably know, The Strokes marked their comeback to live performance in four years with a not-so-secret secret show at the tiny club Dingwalls in London, UK tonight, playing under the name “Venison”.
The 500-capacity venue was packed to the gills with fans, industry folks, and even Coldplay’s Chris Martin.
Some super lucky superfans have already put up videos of the performance. Join me in the full “Wish I Was There Experience”.
Setlist according to this Twitpic by T and NME:
NYC Cops/ The Modern Age/ Hard to Explain/ Reptilia/ Whatever Happened/ You Only Live Once/ Soma/ Vision of Division/ I Can’t Win/ Is This It/ Someday/ Red Light/ Last Nite/ Under Control/ 12:51/ Juicebox/ Heart in a Cage/ Take It or Leave It
Julian Casablancas sported a look not too dissimilar from the studded leather jacket + sunglasses indoors look that dominated his solo tour and Nick Valensi wore something that barely looked like a tank top over his sweaty body.
Starting to break out in Strokes fever and wishing I had a Venison t-shirt!
I just about died when Colbert served VW drummer Chris Tomson by saying he appeared to have the same hygiene practices of Twilight‘s Robert Pattinson and later when he schooled the whole band by breaking out “The Elements of Style” to debate the merits of the Oxford comma.
I know Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is over, but that doesn’t mean the updates on some Asians who are representing needs to end.
Some notable news:
