Catching up from last weekend — so many activities!
OCTOBER 22nd
Started the evening at the SPIN offices for a special rooftop performance by Portland, Oregon’s Hockey. Like The Rapture and The Virgins before them, these boys know how to get girls dancing. Love love love them. Find songs like “Work,” totally irresistible.
Thoroughly enjoyed this Brooklyn-based duo. Dancey rock, and a great cover version of Joy Division’s “Control.”
Screaming Females @ Mercury Lounge
There’s no doubt that the Screaming Females know how to rock out. The trio from New Brunswick, New Jersey, is fronted by the unstoppable Marissa Paternoster. The 22-year-old Paternoster has a distinctively ambiguous look. You can hardly tell if she’s 18 years old or 40 years old — a young boy or an old lady. I like to think of her as a mix of both Harold and Maude — a baby face with a boyish shaggy bowl haircut + an old lady chic wardrobe.
All looks aside, Paternoster can roll out some incredibly mean guitar solos, her small finger fingers flying up and down the fret boards with impressive speed. When she wails into her microphone, you can’t help but think that this little lady is a star.
So do you remember Diesel’s last blow-out party in NYC? This time last year Diesel was celebrating their 30th Anniversary and threw this amazing circus-themed party in Brooklyn where MIA performed (pregnant!) alongside TI, Franz Ferdinand slightly bored the crowd with a seemingly 15 hour long set, and free booze and carni food was served all night long.
Sounds like it was a good time, right?
Well put on your glow-in-the dark shoes (what? you don’t have a pair) and get ready to boogie — Diesel is throwing a “Flash for Fun” party next Tuesday (Oct 27) in honor of their new line of glow-in-the dark clothing (it’s not as bad as it sounds). The location is secret (for now), but if you want in, the rules are simple:
Go to 1 Union Square West & Ask For “The Baron” From Oct 19th – 27th and pick up a bracelet that will gain you entrance into the party. Dial the number on the wristband for the location.
Oh, and it’s not as mysterious or annoying as it might sound. We got word from someone who went and did the above that the folks at the store were nice about it and apologized for all the secrecy.
Jack White has just finished directing the video for “I Cut Like A Buffalo”. Steeped in strong colors juxtaposed with high contrast, moody, black and white footage, it is as provocative as it is stylistically eccentric. Shot entirely at the Third Man headquarters in Nashville, TN, “I Cut Like A Buffalo” will premier exclusively in the UK at 10am GMT on Friday, October 2nd for 24hrs on the VidZone music video application on Playstation 3. It will be available exclusively in the US and Canada on AOL Music’s Spinner.com on Friday, October 2nd starting at 11 am EST.
The work of sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s fashion label Rodarte will be featured in “Quicktake: Rodarte” at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum from Jan. 29, 2010 through March 14, 2010.
This collaboration with Kate and Laura Mulleavy will feature a selection of pieces from the Rodarte collections, as well as a special installation in the Billiard Room of the Carnegie Mansion.
