Behold! Jack Penate did a few lines from one of his New York City music heroes, Biggie Smalls (his other hero? Jeff Buckley), by busting out the song “Dead Wrong” during a show at the Mercury Lounge in NYC.

Check it out as he breaks it down:

Needless to say Jack Penate is an absolutely adorable ball of energy. He looks much better in person than he does in photographs–he looked positively cute in his little zip-up hoodie, black jeans, and brown lace-up shoes when he was checking his gear before starting the show.

But then he unzipped the hoodie to reveal an outfit that could only be described as “pirate chic”–a red and white striped number with said black jeans and brown shoes, simple gold chain necklace now visible around his neck. Despite the newly nautical direction that the show had taken, Jack plowed through his set with astounding enthusiasm, charm, and flare.

I was throughly impressed by his set–the songs off his new album, Matinee, take on a whole new vibrancy when you see Jack and his band (a drummer and bassist) performing the songs live. Jack barrels about the stage with little concern for his proximity to the front row’s heads, welding his guitar in a hap-hazard fashion–legs akimbo and arms flying in the opposite direction as his hips. He becomes a force of nature, and a force to be reckoned with.

Heath Ledger Is Dead

January 22, 2008

in celebrities, movies

I can’t even begin to understand this

At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities. The police said they did not suspect foul play and said they found pills near body.

Did you see Adam Green and Kimya Dawson in all their Whoopi Goldberg-loving glory on The View yesterday? If not, here’s the video. Watch it before the piracy trolls get to it:

I’m so happy that the Peaches are finally getting their due! Bravo to them. Kimya was beside herself, telling Whoopi that she loved her as she gave her a hug, and Adam went for it–giving Whoopi a kiss at the end of the segment. They were both able to promote their solo stuff on the show as well. Hooray!

Here’s a lovely little photo of Kimya, Panda (her daughter), and Whoopi from Kimya’s LJ. Feel the love.

Newsweek recently had a round table interview featuring Angelina Jolie, Daniel Day-Lewis, Ellen Page, George Clooney, James McAvoy, and Marion Cotillard.

I skipped over reading anything Angelina said, but I was particularly intrigued by what James McAvoy had to say about the movie that inspired him to be an actor:

It sounds weird, but there’s a film called “The Goonies.” [Laughter] And I mean it with all my heart. As a young boy that film made me cry because it’s about how you still have your problems at 10 years old or 12 years old. When I was little, you didn’t get chased by pirates and you didn’t get chased by gangsters and nobody was trying to kill you with guns, but your adventures were no less exciting. It helped inspire my imagination.

BLESS. HIS. LITTLE. SCOTTISH. HEART.

Something that also sparked my interest was the mention that emerging hottie Paul Dano wasn’t originally cast as Eli Sunday in There Will Be Blood–in fact he replaced another young actor about 3 weeks into the filming at the drop of a hat! Crazy.

But who did Dano replace?

Woah, this came out of nowhere! You’ve seen him play a moody, mute teen in Little Miss Sunshine, you saw him play a geeky nerd in The Girl Next Door, and you saw him play a religious fanatic in There Will Be Blood. But are you ready to see Paul Dano play HOTTIE? Behold–new pictures of him in the newest issue of GQ in which he stars in a pictorial, “So You Wanna Be a Rock + Roll Star?”.

If you remember from last year’s profile of Paul’s band, Mook, you know the Dano loves to make the music, but who knew that he’d look so great as a rock ‘n’ roller? His tall lanky frame looks fantastic in the designer duds, and his natural hair color is totally working for him.

Check out these photos. Hottie or nottie? Very cute IMHO:

What do the aforementioned Ryan Adams‘ helmed HORION74 videos “Sad Days” and the newly uploaded “Jessica”, “Gloria”, and “Why Heartache Wins” have in common? Well, they all feature (or feature allusions to) (ex?)-girlfriend Jessica Joffe.

ryan adams breakup

On the bright side, Ryan is probably now single… on the down side, he’s probably not ready to mingle. I guess he can’t bounce back as quickly as Elyse Sewell.

Oh Ryan, sometimes you are just too emo for your own good. Sorry to see you hurting.

The descriptions of the videos are all pretty bleak:

“Jessica” (which features the line, “Jessica, I ain’t no good” and images of “Sorry” and other similarly downcast imagery):

if shit is gonna be out there in no matter how small a dose, i thought i would rust off this tune.
better days now mean reflecting on better days. eh
