Eagle-eyed readers pointed me to this news story from Pitchfork about the total FAKENESS of the “Meg White Sex Tape”. In a statement from the White Stripes’ publicist:
“Some people have a very twisted sense of humor and this prank is in particularly bad taste. The tape circulating on the internet as featuring Meg White is fake. It’s definitely not Meg.”
Now y’all can stop picking on Meg and let her be.

Whether or not it’s her in the video (and I really don’t think it is), you have to wonder what the consequences are in terms of the band. Even if the two aren’t related, between having to admit to the world you have a mental illness and then THIS shit (real or not), I’d imagine Meg is never going to step back into the public eye. And good God, imagine Jack’s seething rage. I’d say this iis likely the death of the Stripes.

In reply to Ben, I don’t see how this is the death of the White Stripes. I can imagine Jack being pissed, and I can imagine Meg being upset, but how does that mean the end of the band? The White Stripes have dealt with hype and sledging of all different sorts, and I’d be very surprised if this would be enough to tip it over the edge.
I’m not their therapist though so I’m probably very wrong.
Who knows.

All this negative stuff surrounding Meg does not have to be the end of the White Stripes! With some rest, some meds and a good therapist, Meg will likely be fine in due time. And I don’t mean to diminish what she is going through…I just know from good friends who have suffered from anxiety that it is entirely manageable and many people have successfully bounced back. I have faith Meg will be able to do the same.

In a way this may signal the white stripes semi-retirement or laying low, their image as a school kiddie cartoonish band seem to diminish as they progress with their music. I liked their old stuff when listening to them felt like you are back in school and reminisced the past with new insights. And now, their youthful spirit seem to be flying off . Meg, after all these years of performing in public suddenly gets panic attacks. Maybe that’s why they opted the smaller and more intimate venues in their canadian tour. The one year hiatus white stripes took last 2006 might have rested Meg’s performance ability and doesn’t want to take off. And now, this video? Whether or not it’s fake, its still bad news Meg is insinuated for it. A member of a band that places itself as child-like. If Jack wanted people to accept Meg as this child-like drummer, simple yet effective, he should have taken measures to protect that, even if it’s only that-an image. Then this “twisted sense of humor prank done in bad taste” could have been avoided. And all the people will have are good music and uncancelled shows.
Whether performing or not, in hiatus, or heck raising her own family (but not), it’s only them that can take care of their own peace of mind. Man, I just miss the music. That’s all I’m ever going to miss.

So much overreaction. The timing of her illness with the timing of this COMPLETELY FAKE (people, it’s NOT her!) sex tape is completely coincidental. If the White Stripes do decide to break up, it will not be because some idiot found a sex tape with a girl that looks a little, kinda, sorta like Meg and decided to spread the rumor that it’s her.
Following each album since ‘Elephant,’ there have been rumors swirling that the band is breaking up. Reasons given have ranged from supposedly lackluster albums to personal issues to every imaginable romantic complication. And guess what? The band hasn’t broken up yet. And while all things must end, I think all the speculation is a bit premature.

Guess who I saw!!! I saw the white stripes!!!
