this song could have had such an awesome video for it. what a let down. I would have thought by signing to a major, they were going to try and get mainstream attention. But this video shows other plans.
i think this video is mildly awesome. i mean, it’s obviously very anti-MTV bullshit. have you seen the new video for Arctic Monkeys’ “Flourescent Adolescent”? THAT video is crap. Crap to the utmost extent. And the ending is a shameless ripoff of Radiohead’s video for “Karma Police”. their video for “Brianstorm” was also crappity crap. but we’re talking about Interpol, aren’t we. i think it’s a smart idea for a video and not a waste of time. they’ve stretched the last few moments of a girl’s life into 3 minutes. the scene makes itself clear to you slowly over time and with patience. i mean, it’s no Ryan Adams but………..
;D
the slow motion frustrates the crap out of me…. an interesting idea but a poor video overall…
even flourescent adolescent is better, and thats saying something.
Ok what is wrong with all of you? That video was really good. Attention spans of toddlers perhaps? Its not something I would sit and watch over and over, but I thought it was a clever bit. NOT making a video that would get played on MTV is a compliment to the band. Lil’ Jon gets played on MTV for christsakes, and we all know what an “artist” he is. The video is good….chill lame asses, whomever does not like this would consider 2001 a Space Odyssey boring and C.H.U.D. entertaining. Maybe it is a bit too “mature” for some of you. Aquire some taste please. Oh and Laura, if this was a White Stripes(whom I love dont start asshats) you would be creaming your lame ass trendy hipster pants. Get a clue…love ya!!!
I can see why the slow motion bothers people, but to me it added a sense of dread. Everyone’s reactions of horror/concern/fright around the smiling woman was unnerving, though the ending becomes apparent far too early.
It’s pretty different… and that’s worth something in this age of homogenization.
i didnt mean it was a bad thing the video wouldn’t get played on television. i just said it because its true and after signing to capitol, its ironic and not what the label would want. its bold if nothing else.
the video is definitely unexpected, because, as you all should know, interpol has a dark sound, and their videos have a dark vibe. but oh how we love them…
I actually agree with the Velouria similiarity, but I don’t think that’s automatically bad. It’s a tad anti-climatic, yet it’s sort of a half-assed masterpiece or something. Pretty innovative, and original.
i don’t dispute the fact that the video was probably very technically difficult to do, and I appreciate that the band chose to do something “different” (I generally hate straight performance videos), but I think this video falls flat of its ambitious goals. Has anyone found articles about the ideas behind this video? I’m curious as to why THOSE people and why are they played in different orders? It seems like the background 3 people are being played forward, then halfway through they are played backwards and the girl is being played forward the whole time.
more on the possible technique used over here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imitation_of_Life_(song): “The entire video took twenty seconds to shoot. What you’re watching is a loop that goes forwards for twenty seconds, backwards for twenty seconds, forwards for twenty seconds, backwards for twenty seconds [Mills, sitting on Stipe's right, sways left to right accordingly as the frontman illustrates his point], with one camera, static, and then using a technique called ‘pan and scan’, which is a technical thing that is used when they go from a widescreen format and reformat to fit your television or DVD, moving in on certain parts of the entire picture. And you’ll see that we do that picking up various people within the frame.”
i think the video is good.
the idea is good.
and also the technique.
i don’t think that videos are make for entertainment, they should just be some visual art that accompaign a song.
i think the attention spare problem (as michelle pointed before) is the reason of all this reactions.
this will never get played on television.

haha thats funny, that posted twice…?
in the first comment i meant to say that the idea isn’t original or interesting, despite what it implies!

Oh and your not wasting minutes of your life talking about Kate Moss and what she is wearing? Blehhhhhhhh
if you’re so mature why can you post your name little boy?
good idea, bad execution.

It’s a modern day Velouria by the Pixies. Possibly the worst video in the history of music videos.
you know, when first seeing this video, i was just bored. but after thinking about it, its not bad..
must have been really cheap to make heh
fantastic song though
oh and also

Some interesting leads over here: http://blogs.indiewire.com/mattdentler/archives/013903.html
REALLY reminiscent of R.E.M.’s “Imitation of Life” video by Garth Jennings, but not nearly as cool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEhT2QlRBMo
