The White Stripes’ “Icky Thump” Is Out!

June 19, 2007

in music, white stripes

You are 100% able to listen to the new album–because you just bought it at your local record shop/ legal download service.

What do you think?

Here’s how I think it stacks up with the rest of the White Stripes catalog:

Icky Thump = Get Behind Me Satan (I’m still not sure which I like better)
Icky Thump > Elephant
Icky Thump < White Blood Cells
Icky Thump > De Stijl (Still on the fence on this one)
Icky Thump < The White Stripes

What’s your assessment?

Icky Thump is either my fav…or as good as the first two albums.

CAgirl June 19, 2007 at 1:14 pm

LOVE IT !! I agree with your assessment. It feels familiar yet new. and Jack put the words in again. Yeah! Flying home to Calif on thurs will probably wear out my ipod.

I think that GBMS is getting a lot of hits in reviews as being too experimental and not as good, but I love the guitar-driven-ness of Icky Thump and piano/marimba fun of GBMS equally well. Icky Thump’s a little more…”singable” maybe? I have to say, Baby Brother is my favorite. It’s like Jerry Lee Lewis but with guitar instead of piano. Brilliant!

grrr. stupid computers. okay. here’s what i think: icky thump is better than get behind me satan, not as good as elephant or de stijl (in my opinion, their best work), and is just as good as white blood cells or their self-titled album.

Read Jack’s message at the end of the CD cover. It’s really fun. This CD is SO Led Zepplin. Love it eqally as well as GBMS. I always have to listen to White Stripes a few times before they burrow into my brain never to leave.

Icky Thump just feels like the next chapter. I’ll always remember how much I enjoyed listening to each of their album’s for the first time. They all took a little bit of time to acquire a full taste for. That’s what makes the White Stripes so unique. I don’t really hear the Zeppelin references, but if two people can make as much noise as four, they have to be doing something right. The comparisons whether positive or negative show what a force of band they are, love them or hate them. Who else has lasted as a band these last ten years and been able to consistently draw everyone’s attention?

It is tough for me because when I first bought GBMS, I didn’t like it nearly as much as I do now. I loved Icky Thump immediately (today) but need to give it some time to really develop an opinion.

1.White Stipes
2,3. GBMS, Icky Thump
4. Elephant
5. White Blood Cells
6. De Stijl

I have never experienced a band whose fans’ opinions all differ on which album is best. I’m still waiting on Amazon to ship me my Icky Thump. But just for the record, my rankings…
1. White Blood Cells
2. White Stripes
3. De Stijl
4. Elephant
5. Get Behind Me Satan

I loved the last two albums, but realistically they rank on the bottom of my list. So if it’s unanimous that Icky Thump rocks, that only adds to my anxiousness.

Here goes…

1.White Blood Cells
2.Elephant
3.Icky Thump
4.De Stijl
5.GBMS
6.White Stripes

They’re all really good, its hard to sum up in a list.

Why rank albums? Don’t you have love in your heart for them all. They are all very different and you should be able to appreciate each of them for there uniqueness.

laura June 19, 2007 at 6:04 pm

do you also believe your parents when they say they don’t have a favorite child? i’m just kidding. yest i love them all, but some i do love more than others. just a fact of life.

CAgirl June 19, 2007 at 6:38 pm

Actually it depends on my moods. Some days certain songs irritate me and other days, the same songs are my favorite and I listen to them over and over. I have love in my heart for all of them. I really do :)

Yes, #7 CAgirl, yay for liner notes! Yay for lyrics and cute pics of Jack and Meg. I love that Meg is using some new techniques eg Bone Broke. In St. Andrew Meg’s voice is sped up but is it sped up in Rag and Bone too? It sounds strange to me. Different from I’m Slowing Turning Into You too. But yay for hearing Jack’s “normal” voice in that song, hot! I like the intro to Catch Hell too. Does anybody else feel like Catch Hell was made out of the intro for Death Letter from Blackpool Lights?
The album is so great but I can’t chose or rank them, that is too hard!!

CAgirl June 19, 2007 at 11:03 pm

#20 totally agree with you. I feel Death Letter. I REALLY like Rag and Bone. Jack sounds so cute. Is he talking about his old house in Indian Village????? “Wow this is a mansion!”

Joe K June 19, 2007 at 11:14 pm

The new album is great. But I need to know something because I haven’t seen it written anywhere yet. The white stripes used to play an old song called “Lord, send me an angel” and when I first heard “you don’t know what love is” the main riffs sounded remarkably similar in both songs. In YDKWLI(YJDAYT) the riff just sounds like a chopped-up version of the LSMAA riff. Tell me if anybody else heard this or thought of this or if I’m crazy.

Charlie @ #10 summed it up for me.

Okay, so maybe I am very slow, but has anyone noticed how each WS album has a song with the word ‘little’ in the title? In chronological order, we have ‘Little People,’ ‘Little Bird,’ ‘Little Room,’ ‘Little Acorns,’ ‘Little Ghost,’ and ‘Little Cream Soda.’ What is Jack trying to tell us (if anything)?

Layne June 21, 2007 at 3:21 pm

1. Elephant
2. Get Behind Me Satan
3. Icky Thump
4. White Blood Cells
5. The White Stripes
6. De Stijl

Broken Boy Soldiers ranks higher in my book though.
