White Stripes at Irving Plaza (The Fillmore) Is Sold Out

…of course! Word is that 150 people on line were turned away. Some folks started lining up last night and slept over. By 6:00am there were around 150 already on the line. By 10:00am the line has wrapped around 3 sides of the block of the venue. For locals that means, the side w/ the Irving box office, all the way around to Zen Palate, and all the way to the corner where that theater is. That means past Babies ‘R Us. Yes…PAST BABIES ‘R US.

Were you there?

My favorite is the guy holding out his hands about 2 feet apart. Hahah. What do you think he was he talking about?

Around 10am they distributed little yellow pieces of paper with numbers on them and then proceeded to call in numbers 25 at a time. Once inside folks were ushered into the lobby and vestibule and were told that they could “buy beer and water and use free bathrooms”–because everyone had been waiting so long. I’m not sure why the water wasn’t just free–because we had been waiting so long–but whatevs.

There was a special “reduced” White Stripes line pricing sheet for the liquids which was posted above the bar–if you consider $5 for a Bud and $6 for Guinness a “reduced” price. Not sure who really needs a beer at 10am, but then again, some folks HAD been up all night semi-sleeping on the street as they waited in line.

Then groups of 10 numbers were called at a time, when which a number holder was allowed to enter the room where a fold-out table was set up, manned with 4 Irving Plaza box office workers. One of workers then called out your number, and you obediently stepped up to the table, handed over your state issued ID to them, which they took and wrote down your name, license number, and number of tickets purchased on a little piece of paper that was carbon copied. If you didn’t do this obediently, or you got too close to one of the guys or asked too many questions, you ran the risk of being asked to “step back” because you were invading someone’s personal space.

After the paper was filled out, that person handed over the guy on the end, who then called out your name (even though most of the time you were standing within whispering distance of him) and you forked over $30 in cash per ticket.

After handing over the money, and had throughly felt like a piece of numbered cattle, you were handed the little slip of paper and sent on your merry way.

Did you get tickets? If so, what time did you get to Irving and what was your experience?

yesss got tickets, in fact that’s me leaning up against the rail there with the long sleeve shirt, i would have loved to have met miss modern age! you should have said hello! First person arrived on the line around 9pm, and i got there around 10pm.

i love rock and roll lines, white stripes fans are the best people to chat it up with and some of the most eclectic crowds i’ve ever seen.

I shoed up at around 7:30 and the line was already wrapped around the block. Finally got to the box office around noon and bought my tickets. At around 11:45 they were only taking 5 people at a time inside, so I’m guessing they were gone not long after I left at around noon.

I was also fortunate enough to meet some cool people in line too.

  3. JoshuaB says:

I got there at around 5:35am and was fortunate enough to get tickets.

Also met some very nice people in line. We even passed some of the time solving legal problems!

prob how big your ego is, walking around with the camera like you own the place

  5. laura says:

huh? i just made this video as a fun thing, in no way did i mean to come across as acting like “i owned the place”. i don’t even know what that means in this case.

  6. Alex says:

I got there at around 5:30 and got tix. the five hours didn’t seem as long as I thought it would. I thought I saw someone walking around with a video camera!

  7. laura says:

i didn’t have a video camera, just a small little digital camera that does video, so if that’s the person you’re thinking of, it wasn’t me.

  8. Anonymous says:

    short, green jacket, glasses?

  9. Anonymous says:

big glasses and a military-style jacket don’t necessarily make for good camouflage in union sq…

  10. sarah says:

do i see fo and henry????

  11. laura says:

why not? i looked like a generic hipster/douchebag…i think that’s appropriate camo for any place below/slightly above 14th.

  12. Alex says:

yeah, it probably was just a camera. whatever, I’m still in it.

  13. Charlie says:

Anonymous 4 is an asshole, probably the same asshole that pops up every once in a while to take personal digs at you for doing your job. I think it’s cool you took video, although it isn’t working at the moment. I thought it would be like the Raconteurs gig were I showed up two hours prior and still got tickets. Needless to say, I stood no chance in hell.

  14. Alex says:

yeah, it probably was just a camera. whatever, I’m still in it. Yay for me!

  15. beat royalty says:

I don’t remember signing a release for that video. I better get a cut of any royalties.

  16. Rod says:

i was there at 1am, when there were only about seven people on line. but i had to leave to attend a dance recital at 11am. But i was able to talk to the dude in your picture, wearing the grey t-shirt and khaki shorts. I owe that dude some ice cream and a hacky sack.

  17. laura says:

video not for commercial use. nice to see your name BR!

  18. laura says:

re: Charlie. the video should work, it’s just not showing a still.

  19. rachel says:

this really isn’t meant as a braggadocious, “look at me, i saw the band when they were small” comment, but i’m so glad i was able to see them in tiny venues like birch hill (when it was still open!) without having to wait in line all day for tickets or the show. 10pm the night before….that reminds me of the time we all camped out to see the stripes AND the strokes at irving plaza! awww memories!! :o )
oh and laura, you already know this, but just ignore that asshole–s/he’s not worth your time.

  20. laura says:

oh hey! i’m there! at 1 minute 18 seconds!
i got there around 730 and the line was huge. luckily my friends had been there since 530 and let me stand with them! i was number 113

  21. fo says:

#131 4life. Hey Josh!! See you tuesday. Who knew studying for the bar exam could be so fun?

  22. fo says:

hey sarah! me and henry were totes there on the video!

  23. Alex says:

    @laura (#20)

I think I saw you. I was right in front of you and your friends. I was wearing a red plaid shirt if that matters. way to cheat to, I had to be there since 5:30 ;)

  24. louis says:

i had a fine time waiting in line… I skateboarded there are 5:25 and had number 112.
Though, I had only gone to sleep an hour before that so it was really an alnighter.
The eariest girl was a friend from boston, who was there from 8 pm onwards.
I think the whole shindig was… interesting.

Time to get on line for the show now.

  25. ilse, "the twelve o'clock barrier girl" says:

yes, i am that friend from boston. i went to school there but i’m from new york. i did get there around 9 pm and i was the first person…i thought it would be awful, sleeping on the sidewalk, but i didn’t sleep anyway.
what drama and excitement there was!

  26. favian says:

it was great hanging out with you isle! i don’t think i’ve ever sat with someone for 7 hours and deconstructed jack’s music and persona and not be bored a single bit. see you soon ;p

  27. JoshuaB says:

Hey #131 – see you Tuesday!

  28. CAgirl says:

Totally jealous of all of you that live in New York. I love New York!!!

  29. Alex says:

    @ Laura and Louis

I know you guys. I got there at around 5:30. I was the guy in front of you with the red plaid shirt on. BTW, What time should I get to the show if a I want to get on the balcony?

  30. Alex says:

    @ Louis and Laura

I know you guys. I got there at 5:30 and was right in front of your group. Can’t wait to got to the show, BTW what time should I get there if I want to get on the balcony?

  31. favian says:

they didn’t decline non-state issued id’s at the line. i gave my college id, they didn’t say anything.

  32. Andy says:

Anybody have one for Tuesday night? Will pay a premium, and show up early.

    917-545-5566.

  33. Amy (now known as #38) says:

I arrived around 2:30 am and staked out my claim. I could have come later and be safe but everyone who was there were really chill and interesting so I decided that I would rather sit with them and chat then hang at some bar.

Laura, if you had come earlier you would have been able to tape the street hockey match that occured. Some of the guys in front brought their sticks and were great entertainment for us all in the wee haunting hours of the evening. It reminded me of Wayne’s World because the game would be suspended whenever a cab would come down the street. Game On…. Good stuff…

Anyways, it was nice to see all the old veterans out (you and me) and meet the all new fans. I am certain this is going to be a great show.

  34. Anonymous says:

i was 3rd wen they sold out

  35. Alen says:

I was the last person to get a ticket, I got there at around 7:55 AM. They called me in individually, after calling in people by 25, 10, 5, and 2…and when I was inside I heard the lady tell everyone they weren’t getting tickets. You should have seen their faces when I left with my voucher.

  36. Andy says:

Anyone have the setlist from last night?

  37. Mike says:

I was among the last people to get tickets (when they were calling in groups of five right at the end, I was in the fifth or sixth group), but dear god, the 4 1/2 hours was completely worth it. I’ve been to dozens upon dozens of concerts, including the Stripes, but this was hands down the greatest show I’ve ever seen. There isn’t even a close runner-up. Sure, the standing in line process sucked, but I would do it a thousand times over for another concert as incredible as that.
