The first US gig of past TMA “Band of the Day”, The Holloways is not tonight as you might have thought…it was last night at a TVT Record showcase at Lakeside Lounge in the East Village. Whoooppps!
But no fret mes amis, if last night was any indication, their show tonight at Mercury Lounge should be pruuuurrrttyy good.

Last Thursday +1 Music Management had their 3rd Year Anniversary Birthday Party at the newly re-located and re-opened Luna Lounge in Williamsburg. They had a slew of their roster play for the event: Eugene, Monsters Are Waiting…, Illinois, and Stellastarr*, playing to a comfortably packed crowd–no small feat, seeing as how the new Luna Lounge is about 30x bigger than the original space of the cramped Lower East Side outfit.
Seeing as how I’m and old lady and it WAS in Brooklyn (it’s scary out there–hold me!), I managed to only catch 2 acts during the night. California-based Monsters Are Waiting… had a nice sorta Ladytron light feel to them, with lead singer Annalee Fery’s airy (and VERY girlie) vocals floating atop electronic keyboards and a strong rock-based band sound. For me, the highlight of their set was when they busted out a version of The Stone Roses’ “I Wanna Be Adored”.

The other band I got to see was Illinois–who I’d seen once before at North Six when they opened up for the The Kooks. I have to say, Illinois totally impressed me the second time around. Lead singer Chris Archibald was raucous and a little bit sloppy–but in an endearing way…you know, like your gosh-darn funny/crazy/friend who you can’t quite figure out why you like him–he’s just fun to be out with and you know there’s always a good time to be had when he is around. The same could be said about his band. It’s kinda good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll with a little bit of hick/down home sensibility thrown in.
Good times, good times.

Bob Dylan–legendary troubador, zeitgeist-setter, famous mumbler, and enormous fan of Dr. Seuss books? Not sure if the last item really is true, but someone with an an uncanny ability to imitate Bob Dylan got it in their head to record a bunch of Dr. Seuss books to Dylan-esque music, and you can hear the results on the Dylan Hears a Who website.
Created by a mysterious person/collective called “Eye-Berried Pall“–who no one can seem to figure out who/he/she really are/is.
It’s a ridiculously elaborate project…this mystery person/people should stand up and benefit from the fruits of their labor!! Although they probably would stand a good chance of getting sued by everyone under the sun. Hahha.
Oh, and all the MP3s are available for download!

Horns, Latin-flavored sounds, and the return of big, badass guitars is what we have to look forward to off the new White Stripes album, according to NME’s filing on an exclusive London listening party of three tracks off Icky Thump. Read more.
‘Icky Thump’
Starts with Meg on pounding bass drums, then breaks into an experimental, heavy sounding 70s riff, that at points varies from a ‘Black Math’-like rock sound to electronic sounding, processed sections. The vocals almost never repeat themselves as and there’s little conventional structure. Jack’s vocals are heavily treated in the production with one of the few clear lyrics in this mainly instrumental track, going, “Why don’t you kick yourself out, you’re an immigrant too”.‘What Love Is’
A more classic sounding White Stripes song recalling ‘White Blood Cells’-era. It’s a strong, melodic love song with Jack singing the following for the chorus: “You’re not hopeless or helpless/I hate to sound cold/But you don’t know what love is/You do as you’re told”.‘Conquest’
The biggest departure of the three tracks previewed. It’s an unexpected mix of big guitars and a bold horn section. Boasting a Spanish, Latin feel, it’s a third person storytelling song about a serial womaniser, who finally meets his match. “Conquest, he was out to make a conquest” sings Jack. “She was just another conquest, but the hunted became the huntress”.

So on Friday night, in the midst of falling asleep (I’m old, it happens) in that fancy-pants bar right next to the Luna Lounge‘s new location in Brooklyn, I found out from Ben from the Robbers on High Street that Albert Hammond Jr. is on the same label as they are–James Iha’s New Line imprint, Scratchie Records.
Apparently it was released in the US on March 6th in the US. Apparently I live in a cave.
But please go by Albert’s album. It’s a nice little indie record with some pretty catchy songs.
The ROHS and Albert will be playing the same New Line/ Scratchie showcase at SXSW.
Blender Bar at the Ritz- 320 E. 6th Street, 7pm-2am with Albert Hammond Jr, Robbers on High Street, Midnight Movies, Office, Eugene, and The Sights. Badge/Wristbands only

models-modeling agencies-reality t.v. – New York Times
Unlike other reality TV series about the modeling business, which tend to be coated in copious amounts of sugar, there are no soft coos of reassurance from Tyra Banks or tempered criticisms from Heidi Klum. “The Agency†serves it up raw.

I’m fascinated by Claire Danes’s budding dance career. Rach sent me this link to a video of Claire Danes dancing with megahottie Patrick Wilson for the new Gap ad for Boyfriend trouser.
I love it!!!
Uh… but that kiss at the end. Let’s just hope that Wilson wifey Dagmara Dominczyk and baby has nothing to worry about.

The joy in my life increases x10 because ONTD exists.
Quothe Rufus in Time Out (London):
‘Tulsa’, about Killers frontman Brandon Flowers sounds particularly intriguing. ‘I don’t know him that well,’ Wainwright admits, ‘but I wrote this song about him which is kind of hilarious – it says he tastes like potato chips in the morning.’
Lyrics:
Tulsa – Rufus Wainwright
You taste of potato chips in the morning.
Your face has the Marlon Brando club calling.
And then the thought that I owe it all to Tulsa.
And that fat guy with the Queen shirt that we both signed together.
Wanting it for someone who’d been down forever.Your suit was the whitest thing since you-know-who.
I feel that that savior I’ve been may be you.
And then the thought that I owe it all to Tulsa.
And that poor girl who waited in the rain for hours to meet me completely. And I owe it all to Tulsa
Just a reminder
Of the antiques shop I want to go back to and visit when it´s open
In Tulsa, Oklahama
This song’s about you.
And here’s the convo I had w/ Rach about this:
Rach: i hope it pisses flowers off
Me: GAYS ARE DANGEROUS
Rach: but brandon cant say anything about him negative cos then he’ll be gaybashing. SUCK IT FLOWERS.
