HOW I HEARD ABOUT THEM: I saw a photo of them on Andrew Kendall‘s web site and wondered who they were.
LATEST RELEASE: Pluvial [EP on Angular Records]
SONG LISTENED TO: “Elvis”
WHAT THEY SOUND LIKE: Like nothing else out there right now. Confusing, but in a good way. A little Joy Division-y, with abstract lyrics, and a bit of dancey flair thrown in. More speaking than singing, perhaps in the style of Eddie Argos from Art Brut, These New Puritans do sound a bit art-school-y. They sound dark and mysterious, not in your face and obvious. To me they seem like the type of band whose songs grow on you the more you listen to them.

I’m not sure what to make of them, but I sure am interested. If their live show is as ridiculous and entertaining I think they might be, this could be a band to keep your eye on to catch a cult following. Their official site is a mind-blowing experience, full of half sentences, poetry, movie and mp3 links, and seemingly random links to photographs. These kids seem to be completely out of their minds, I can’t understand a god damn thing that’s going on. But just because you don’t understand something doesn’t mean that it’s not worth trying to figure out.

V magazine already likes them and have gotten the Hedi Slimane seal of approval.
1 to 5 RATING: 4
OTHER BLOGS THAT HAVE TALKED ABOUT THEM: Merry Swankster, Tommy Shots
LISTEN TO MORE: “En Papier” [MP3] also on the Myspace

Check out their BIZARRO webcast which made me love them even more:
