I saw the Raconteurs during their first night here in NYC at Roseland Ballroom. The set list was:
Intimate Secretary/ Level/ Hands/ Together/ Yellow Sun –>Moody Miss Judy/ Store Bought Bones/ Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down): Cher/Nancy Sinatra cover/ Broken Boy Soldier. ENCORE: Steady, As She Goes/ Blue Veins

By far the best moment of the night was Jack singing Nancy Sinatra’s the Sonny Bono-written “Bang Bang”. It totally could have been a White Stripes moment.

In the audience were Jack White’s wife and baby’s mama mother of baby Scarlett, Karen Elson, and director Jim Jarmusch.

In no particular order:
Trader Joe’s
Holy smoke! I grew up with a Trader Joe’s near me, but for some reason I never went to it–probably because I didn’t cook. I just recently got back into *gasp* shopping at the supermarket to cook in my apartment, and one day after I’d been to Union Square Wines I was riding the M14D across 14th Street when I saw that Trader Joe’s had a wine shop. I had totally forgotten TJ’s was near Union Square. I went in and WOAH, it’s so cheap there! And GOOD food.
Whole Foods can EAT IT! TJ’s 4EVA…although I did buy this really tasty pesto sauce from WF the last time I was there. Poor Food Emporium, home of my freshman year of college food shopping, how quickly you’ve fallen from my favor.
“My Love” by Justin Timberlake featuring T.I.
Um…I love this song. It’s so hot.
My Wacom writing tablet
I’ve had this Wacom writing tablet since college, and when I moved I brought it with me. But I misplaced the pen, so it was pretty much useless. I looked online today to see how much writing tablets cost and I was bummed to see that even the cheapest one was like $90 at J & R. Damnit!
I looked to see if they sold replacement pens, but to no avail. I checked the store hours to see what time they closed today and saw they were closed for the Jewish holidays. Since I wasn’t going out shopping I decided to clean out these baskets I have been meaning to get in order for months and months and MONTHS. Low and behold, I found the pen to the writing tablet in a random bag. Hooray!

Wanted to do a quick update. I saw a Swedish band at Mercury Lounge not to long ago called Johnossi. I had a terrible time trying to remember the name of this band until I read that it was the combined names of the two guys in the band: John and Ossi.
What do they sound like? Think White Stripes meets Two Gallants. So yes, that basically equates to being awesome. They create such an incredibly full and LOUD sound for just two people.

I think the funniest thing about Johnossi shows is that you can totally tell who got in on the band’s guest list: just look for the fashionably hip tall skinny blond-haired, blue eyed folks in the audience. It’s just a reminder of why you should never let your significant other go to Sweden without you.
In any case, please listen to Johnossi’s “Execution Song” on their MySpace. It’s just BEGGING to be bought for a car commercial. It has the right amount of guitar reverb and straight-on rock sound to work with an image of a car zipping around winding bends. Mark my words.

The Killers played their “secret” gig at Webster Hall tonight. Tickets were available online as late as 3 hours before the show.
As we waited for the Killers to come on, the general consensus on the “children’s summer stock version of Moulin Rouge meets strip mall restaurant opening” set design was thumbs down. The giantic mirrored ball with Christmas lights dangled around it was…confusing to say the least.

[Seriously, what is all that crap????]
When the Killers came on stage the audience errupted into applause. At the risk of “blowing their wad too soon” (that’s what we call it in the biz), the band played some of their biggest (and soon to be biggest) hits right off the bat: “Somebody Told Me”, off Hot Fuss, and “When You Were Young”, off the new album. The momentum slowed down a bit 3/4 through, but the final encore of “Mr. Brightside” pumped the audience up one final time.
They debuted a handful of new songs off the new LP…and they sounded very Bowie meets Stephen Trask. So in a phrase, “glam rock”.
Not only was frontman Brandon Flowers sporting the “pornstache” but drummer Ronnie Vannucci also appeared to have his clothing and grooming styling done on the NBC backlot during a taping of “My Name is Earl.” There was also another guy in the back who seemed to be playing the keyboards and guitar who ALSO had a ‘stache to rival Burt Reynolds.
I have to say, The Killers live show has vastly improved from the very first time I ever saw them (at Ultragrrrl’s Prom at Rothko back in June of 2004), and most certainly since I saw them in a traumatizingly bad episode of American Pepsi Smash Hits–the single incident that convinced me that the Killers sucked live.
Although they are still no Morrissey or White Stripes, they are trying. Brandon Flowers twirled about the stage in what Jeff called “Nutcracker spins” (hands up at a 90 degree angle, hopping on one leg, around and around in a circle) and looked a little bit like a Pee Wee Herman doll being pulled on strings, but it was better than him just standing in front of the keyboards, pounding away and singing in an unanimated fashion.
Somehow the music seemed less monotone, the songs were allowed space to breathe. All in all, a good night for pop music.
