According to reports published in WWD today, The Strokes have gotten into a tiff over money with Wenner Media over their compensation fee for playing Rolling Stone’s 1,000 issue celebration next week. It is rumored that Wenner originally made a verbal agreement for an undisclosed sum to the rock ‘n’ rollers but have since scaled back the amount offered.

A conflicting report from another snitch disputed that claim, stating the band tried to pull a fast one on Wenner and inflated their booking fee, to which Wenner bargained them back down to the original asking price.

It’s also rumored that The Strokes weren’t even supposed to be the headlining act, rather an opener to a more estabilshed rock group like Tom Petty or Bruce Springsteen. Who’s taking the place of the Heartbreaker and The Boss? Uh…Paul Shaffer, of course.

Wow, those lyrics of the song “Make Damn Sure” by Taking Back Sunday sure have new meaning for me. I was lucky (?) enough to accompany Senior Central Village, my BIEMO (Brother in Emo), to the emo-rific TBS show tonight at Irving Plaza. (Strong Island REPREZENT!) I learned that today was the day that their latest album, Louder Now, dropped into stores (I found out just a few hours ago while watching The Daily 10 on E!) so you can imagine how nutzo the show was.

We got there just in time to join in on the “TBS! TBS! TBS!” chanting that almost every single person in that venue seemed to be shouting in unison moments before the band came on. When they did arrive on stage, lead singer Adam Lazzara only had to grunt and the audience WIGGED OUT screaming their heads off. I have NEVER seen Irving Plaza so crowded, sweaty, and violent in my life.

As soon as the band launched into their first song, the crowd started swaying to and fro, side to side. A ripple of people pushing waved through the crowd with such fluid and forceful motion I swore I was starting to get seasick. Kids were hurling their bodies up into the air (sometimes with the help of a friend hoisting them up) and crowd surfing. I’m not talking one or two kids, I’m talking at least 3-5 kids every minute during the show.

Then pockets of slam dancing pits formed throughout the main floor. People started ripping off their clothing and chucking it into the air toward the stage. As the show progressed, people in the balcony started throwing empty beer cups down at the audience below, and empty plastic water bottles were flung up towards the heavens from below.

It was pure mayhem. Absolute MAYHEM.

I loved how guitarist/vocalist Fred Mascherino insisted on using his screamo voice even when he was simply talking to the audience. I cringed when thinking of what it must be like to be with that guy at the library. The ‘brarians would be having NONE of that, I’m sure!

I have no idea what any of the songs they sang (except for the aforementioned one, which I knew from the 20 second spots they run of the video after episods of Yo Mama) because the crowd kept screaming along to the songs so I couldn’t really hear the band singing, but somehow by the end of the night my voice was hoarse from screaming “TBS!” and “I LOooooOOOOOVVVEEEE YOUUUUU!” at the band throughout the show.

Oh, btw, TBS fans have the WORST sense of rhythm ever. Every time a crowd-wide clap started in the audience, it was always off from the drum beat. Oh well.

Here’s a photo I took during the show. Not bad for a crap little cameraphone.

Speaking of being emo, you HAVE to watch this video of some dude named Philleps singing along to Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar We’re Going Down”. It’s hilarous! I love his friend who’s watching TV and is totally annoyed with his antics. I also like how he thinks the lyrics are “we’re sipping weed” instead of “we’re sleeping in”. And it almost turns into a gay porno during the line “loaded God complex, cock it at pull it.” Hahaha.

Ok so there were a few other things I’ve done in the last few days that I would like to mention right now.

I got a chance to go see the new play by Adam Rapp, Red Light Winter, at the Barrow Street Theater on Friday. As you may already know, I was a huge theater geek when I was a teenager, so I was trilled to get a chance to see a new stage show that didn’t involve a vague story being drawn around some 80s pop songs.

The play is basically about two college friend who spend a night in Amsterdam and bring a mysterious young prostitute back to their hotel room. A year later their paths cross again in New York, and drama ensues. It had a sold-out run at Chicago’s esteemed Steppenwolf Theater.

One of the things I didn’t realize about this play was that there’s FULL NUDITY (both male and female) in it, so if you were planning on bringing the folks to the show, you might want to think twice about it.

The dialogue can be very wordy at times (and a little hard to believe someone would say in real life), but all in all I did find the play stuck with me, even now, a few days after I’d seen it. It touches upon the themes of disillusioned (or imagined) love, poisonous relationships, and emotional cruelty that people inflict upon each other.

The ending is a little predictable and the character of Christina was kinda “eh”, but Christopher Denham‘s performance as the shy and socially uncomfortable Matt is strong and will eerily remind you of someone you know or went to high school with, as it did with me and my guest.

If you’re interested in checking the play out for yourself, head here and use the code “RW2BLOG” to get a discount of $15 off each ticket up to 8 for performances up until May 13, 2006.

Speaking of Adam Rapp, did you know his brother is none other than the Pale One himself, Mr. Anthony Rapp of RENT fame? Tonight marked the celebration of the 10-year anniversary of RENT being on Broadway!!

True to the RENT line/lottery tradition, there was a lottery held for $20 tickets in the first few rows and American Idol alums Frenchie and Constantine picked out the names one by one and shouted them out using bullhorns and they ended up giving away more than the advertised 34 tickets to the benefit show.

The original Broadway cast (including Rapp, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Idina Menzel, and Taye Diggs) re-created their roles in tonight’s show. The afterparty was held at Cipriani’s on 42nd Street with celebs like uh…Joey Fatone and Luke Perry coming out to show their support.

The also have a RENT podcast you can download or subscribe to on iTunes.

As you may remember, I flipped out when I got a chance to go to the RENT movie premiere last year. Yup, I’m officially having the gayest week ever.

I also want to mention that I went to see everyone’s favorite sleepy Britrockers, Elbow, at Webster Hall last Thursday. There was one completely AMAZING new song they played (Rachel thought it was called “McGregor”?) that seriously had me crapping my pants. Anyone have a live recording of that song? I found it so powerful and moving with its ominous drum beats and soaring Guy Garvey vocals. Beauuuutiful.

If you spot any of this gear, contact the band via their Myspace profile.

Hello friends around the world,

we could really do with your help right now:

This morning between 5am and 8.30 am our van was broken into in the “secure, with security guard” car park of the Doug Fir Lonuge hotel and venue in Portland, Oregon.

The following stuff was stolen, leaving us broke, sad and not really able to play tonight or at all for that matter. If you kindred spirits out there could keep an eye on Ebay to see if these stolen things appear, then let us know, and in the mean time if you are from Portland/Seattle area and want to donate gear for a performance we would be truly blessed.
