I Just Wanna Bring You Down So Badly In the Worst Way

Wow, those lyrics of the song “Make Damn Sure” by Taking Back Sunday sure have new meaning for me. I was lucky (?) enough to accompany Senior Central Village, my BIEMO (Brother in Emo), to the emo-rific TBS show tonight at Irving Plaza. (Strong Island REPREZENT!) I learned that today was the day that their latest album, Louder Now, dropped into stores (I found out just a few hours ago while watching The Daily 10 on E!) so you can imagine how nutzo the show was.

We got there just in time to join in on the “TBS! TBS! TBS!” chanting that almost every single person in that venue seemed to be shouting in unison moments before the band came on. When they did arrive on stage, lead singer Adam Lazzara only had to grunt and the audience WIGGED OUT screaming their heads off. I have NEVER seen Irving Plaza so crowded, sweaty, and violent in my life.

As soon as the band launched into their first song, the crowd started swaying to and fro, side to side. A ripple of people pushing waved through the crowd with such fluid and forceful motion I swore I was starting to get seasick. Kids were hurling their bodies up into the air (sometimes with the help of a friend hoisting them up) and crowd surfing. I’m not talking one or two kids, I’m talking at least 3-5 kids every minute during the show.

Then pockets of slam dancing pits formed throughout the main floor. People started ripping off their clothing and chucking it into the air toward the stage. As the show progressed, people in the balcony started throwing empty beer cups down at the audience below, and empty plastic water bottles were flung up towards the heavens from below.

It was pure mayhem. Absolute MAYHEM.

I loved how guitarist/vocalist Fred Mascherino insisted on using his screamo voice even when he was simply talking to the audience. I cringed when thinking of what it must be like to be with that guy at the library. The ‘brarians would be having NONE of that, I’m sure!

I have no idea what any of the songs they sang (except for the aforementioned one, which I knew from the 20 second spots they run of the video after episods of Yo Mama) because the crowd kept screaming along to the songs so I couldn’t really hear the band singing, but somehow by the end of the night my voice was hoarse from screaming “TBS!” and “I LOooooOOOOOVVVEEEE YOUUUUU!” at the band throughout the show.

Oh, btw, TBS fans have the WORST sense of rhythm ever. Every time a crowd-wide clap started in the audience, it was always off from the drum beat. Oh well.

Here’s a photo I took during the show. Not bad for a crap little cameraphone.

taking back sunday at irving plaza

Speaking of being emo, you HAVE to watch this video of some dude named Philleps singing along to Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar We’re Going Down”. It’s hilarous! I love his friend who’s watching TV and is totally annoyed with his antics. I also like how he thinks the lyrics are “we’re sipping weed” instead of “we’re sleeping in”. And it almost turns into a gay porno during the line “loaded God complex, cock it at pull it.” Hahaha.

Taking Back Sunday blows, bottom line, their old shit is fun to listen to, but that’s about it. So all you teenyboppers should grow up and listen to real music.
