[...] Some may be wonder, “Was this show ANY better than those crap-tastic Bowery shows you obnoxiously moaned about a few months ago?” Well it’s kinda like comparing apples and oranges…the venue/ experience/ sound was of course 10x better at the Bowery shows, but the crowd was lame in the sense that no one was dancing or remotely excited.
[...] In his entries from the Maxwell’s show and the first Bowery Ballroom show, Nick confirms my idea that the New Jersey show was great and the Bowery Ballroom show sucked balls. BIG TIME. So bad that everyone pissed me off enough to write this rant after the Friday show. To quote the guitarist: MAXWELL’S: “Showtime. We’re escorted through the crowd, and of course, when we hit the stage, everything is fine. duh. why do i do this to myself? Its a rough, sloppy, and aggressive show, and people are screaming, jumping, dancing, sweating. We try playing an acoustic version of “maps,” which we haven’t practiced, and i butcher it trying to remember my parts on the spot, but the sentiment is there for us on stage, and seemingly strong in the crowd too.” [...]

Some people just aren't comfortable dancing in public.

real question: how can any real hipster afford the rents in NYC?
and will the old people eventually take over the city with their
401Ks and stock options?

I have to say that after seeing tonight's show I completely agree. The New York crowd just fucked up completely... the YYY's were giving out crazy sweet vibes like there's no tomorrow, but the crowd didn't get wacked out enough. Either way I danced my ass off... so I don't care.

I really don't understand all this focus on whether the crowd acted enthusiastic enough...We enjoyed the show just fine.

I can remember being puzzled that this really tall dude next to me was standing stone still (and cut out before the set was over) but, like, whatever.

I can't agree more with your comment. I spent the show trying to listen to the band and rock out, but two assholes behind me kept talking and talking and talking as if they were out to dinner at some lame-ass uptown cigar lounge and everyone else around was standing lock solid to the ground as if they were staring at a Picasso on a college art school field trip to the MOMA. And if that wasn't bad enough as Karen O launched into the beautiful Modern Romance, a fight broke out between some Melon Head and some Entertainment Lawyer looking dude. The band totally rocked, as they always do, and Karen O managed to be her usual crazy self despite the corpses she was performing to, but with crowds like this, I was surprised they didn't leave the stage with a big fuck you. She told us motherfuckers were "her love" but where was the love? What is up with us NY'ers? What happened to the YYY shows back in the Brownies days when it seems we all actually knew how to have fun? Disgusted. And embarrased for us all.

Do you guys really believe it was all the audience's fault this show "didn't rock" or could any of it been the bands fault? I had a good time last night, was it the best performance of the YYYs I have seen? No. Was it a bad crowd? Maybe. Was it both of these things that effected the outcome of how good this show was. Yes. Also if your expierence is being effected by the crowd that is somewhat your own fault. I was with a person who was hating on the crowd during the show and I told them to critize afterwards and just enjoy themselves while it is happening. Don't let what other people do effect your good times. So tonight lets just have fun.
