November 2005

Tonight I went to the 12 midnight showing of RENT. Yes, that makes this the 2nd time I’ve seen this movie in one week. The first time was at the world premiere.

But this time was just as fun. It was great to see it with such a responsive crowd. The most fun thing was seeing all the young teenage kids dressed up as the movie characters and/or decked out in RENT paraphernalia and homemade tshirts. And you can imagine the pandemonium that erupted when original cast member Anthony Rapp and newbie Tracie Thoms ran into the theater right before the film started.

Oh and totally unrelated, I saw Mercedes from “America’s Next Top Model” Cycle 2 at dinner.

Hooray geekdom! I’m so retarded tired.

UPDATE: The NY Times gave the movie a positive review. In addition to “RENT,” I’ve seen Walk the Line and “Jesus Is Magic” in the theater. Walk the Line, performances are better than the movie itself, which can be hokey, over-the-top and hard to believe through many portions of the movie, if not the whole thing. “Jesus Is Magic”…apparently I’m not really into Sarah Silverman’s comedy because I didn’t think it was as funny as I had anticipated.

Check out Tricia Romano’s clubber/nightlife personalities rundown of who is thankful for what this Thanksgiving. Karen and Sarah are thankful for each other, Jessica Coen is thankful for Adderall (I’m sure TomKat is thrilled), music producer Gordon Raphael is thankful for being “sent home” from the new Strokes album, and the only thing I could come up with was “Friends, family, and Ryan Adams’s inability to release no less than three albums this calendar year. God bless the man who drinks.” My mom is so proud.

What are you thankful for this year?

Jack White

Check out the latest show by artist Maria E. Piñeres entitled “A Rogues’ Gallery”, which features needlepoint versions of celebrity mugshots. Above you can see the one she did of Jack White from the infamous Jason VonBondie incident. The show stays up at DCKT Contemporary until December 17, 2005.

Cindy Crawford in Maxim

Holy moley! I just got a lady boner looking at the new cover of Maxim with Cindy Crawford. She looks great!

More pics here and the whole interview (and even MORE pics) here.

Taking a look at the list of titles which Sony BMG used XCP technology which installed a rootkit onto consumer’s computers, I can’t help but wonder if they intentionally put XCP as a punishment for buying crappy music like Celine Dion, Our Lady Peace, and Switchfoot. Talk about insult to injury!

The latest update to the evilness factor of this whole XCP ordeal is that it may have been based on open-source code.

I’m totally against drug abuse and all that, but I can’t help but feel that Kate Moss is still one of the most beautiful women in the world and I’d still love to see her looking gorgeous in advertisements and magazines. She’s such a great model. Take a look at her being attacked by ‘razzi in Barcelona–she still looks very pretty even when confused and a little bummed out!

Here she is sitting at a bar, drinking with friends. I’m sure it’s ginger ale she’s chugging.

Wonder what Pete Doherty is up to these days…

UPDATE: Appears as though he’s in rehab in Arizona.

I can’t remember if I’ve already written about this or not, but I don’t remember reading lots of emails saying “gag” or “oh shoot me now,” so I’m assuming I haven’t. But according to rumors, MTV’s “Real World” is currently setting up house in the decidedly “not really Detroit” suburban area of The DRoyal Oak. It’s basically like calling it “Real World: New York” and setting it on Long Island.

Anyways, locals are theorizing that MTV is setting up came there in order to take advantage of some Super Bowl XL magic, as Detroit is the host city for 2006. Would kinda love to see the RW kids going into downtown Detroit for a show and then running back to their car and driving as fast as they can back to the safety of the suburbs. Stay tuned…!

Ryan Adams played TriPAC tonight as part of the Wall Street Rising free concert series. As per usual, the show was a brilliant comedy of errors. First there was a false start to the show, where the band was announced but no one could find Ryan. About 10 minutes later Ryan Adams had apparently been found and/or arrived at the venue. He explained later that he had gotten lost and couldn’t find the performance space.

There were some entertaining rants about Ryan’s disastrous experience filming Austin City Limits (which airs in January). Basically Ryan got mad that one of his recently purchased (???) fancy guitars that “looked so cool” could NOT stay in tune. He became so agitated that he turned to a man and told him that if he gave him 20 dollars, Ryan would sell him the evil acoustic guitar. The man replied, “I only have 5 bucks.” Ryan responded by shoving his boot through the guitar. “It was either going to be gravity or my boot,” Ryan commented to the audience tonight about the incident.

Ryan kept taking loads of time between songs to have side conversations with the Cardinals and to take time out to tell the audience ridiculous stories about how he thew his glasses out of a cab window the night before, and that he was having trouble remembering the songs but that they were all the same anyway…“I’ll kill myself now…or I’ll kill myself later, fuck you now, or fuck you later,” songs about being sad, etc.

And in a twist of “how did this come about?,” Minnie Driver came out for “Games” and did the backing vocals (see below photo) She seemed kinda hesitant to do the song, telling Ryan, “Yeah, I know the song, but like ‘la la la’…” Also looked like Danny Clinch is continuing to document Ryan and co. as he was seen running around the stage with a video camera.

P.S.- I still totally have the biggest crush on Ryan and his perfectly-shaped behind. He wore a red and black checked shirt, jeans, and cowboy boots. He didn’t look anything like his Grizzly Man self. *Dreamy sigh*

As you may already know, I LOVE RENT! Like, a lot. Through the kindness of a really sweet person, I was fortunate enough to attend the world premiere of the movie at the Ziegfeld Theater tonight and the after party at Roseland.

I was a little nervous about seeing the movie because I’m such a HUGE fan of the stage musical, but I have to say I was not disappointed. I loved it. There were some great moments that Rentheads will really get a kick out of. I was so happy during the whole film. I’m not sure if it’s for everyone, but I adored it and I’m seeing it again next week at the midnight showing on the 22nd. Ok, are you now embarrassed for me? Sorry! I just have to geek out on this.

With arms wide open...

My favorite moment was during “What You Own” when they show Roger in Santa Fe. It’s amazing because it looks like they switched the real footage with outtakes from a Creed “With Arms Wide Open” and/or Britney Spears “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” video (above). Yessssss!

At the premiere I saw Sarah Silverman (who has a small but hilarious role in the film), Little Steven, Joey “‘Nsync” Fatone (Who has been “Mark Cohen” in the Bway production), the dude who played “Will” on Alias, and of course the movie cast, Adam Pascal, Taye Diggs, Idina Menzel, Wilson J. Heredia, Jesse L. Martin, Rosario Dawson, Tracie Thoms, etc. But I was most shocked when I saw noneother than the original stage “Joanne,” Fredi Walker!!!!!! That was the best.

During the actual screening of the movie, the cast, director, and family of Jonathan Larson were announced and made to show themselves. When the “new kids” Rosario and Tracie were called, they both stood up and whooped at each other and pointed back and forth, as if to say “no YOU are the best!” “no no, YOU are the best!” It was cute when Wilson and Taye were standing up and they kept pointing at one another as well.

The afterparty was a fancy event. There was a full catered dinner buffet and open bar. Roseland was decorated with “trash” and flyers and other assorted “RENT-type” decorations like broken TVs, wires, flaming trash cans, etc. There was even a “street musician” positioned downstairs by the bathrooms and coat check. All around the place were projections of stills from the movie, and also of the RENT logo and sayings like “Leap of Faith.”

Night After Night

November 17, 2005

in uncategorized

After filling myself up to my eyeballs with Rent, I headed over to Hiro to catch The Sounds previewing songs off their new album, Dying to Say This to You. The crowd up front was totally into it, jumping around, punching their fists up in the air, and flickering their lighters. (But according to reports, the NYC crowd paled in comparison to the LA crowd, who were even more rowdy.)

One girl would no longer stand to be simply in the audience, so she leapt onstage between songs and held Maja‘s hand up in the air. “Get this person I don’t know away from me,” Maja’s facial expression seemed to say.

Everyone’s favorite fashionable DJs, The MisShapes, James Iha, and the Tarts of Pleasure spun the ones and twos as well. I saw some girls with AMAZING 80s hair, but alas, no pictures of them…although I’m sure Last Night’s Party snapped them. They really were amazing looking…and had the “Addicted to Love” glassy eyes going on.

MORE: I also happen to see Michael from Stellastarr* last night at the show. Can I just say here that Michael is always such a delight to see out and about? Anyway, he told me that he and the band were leaving for Mexico the next morning to play an electronic music festival. They are one of only 3 rock acts on the bill, and the other two sing in Spanish. I gave Michael a run-down in need-to-know Espanol–mainly “No comprendo.” “Tu hablas ingles?” and “Donde esta el bano?”

Apparently people LOVE Stellastarr* in Mexico, they’ve been getting a ton of radio airplay. I told Michael, “You guys could be the next Morrisey,” because Mexicans LOVE Morrisey, so actually it makes sense that they’d love SS*. Michael said they were brushing up their Spanish language song covers like “La Bamba.” I suggested that they do a cover of a song from Christina Aguilera’s Spanish album, Mi Reflejo. Here’s to having a safe flight guys!
