This Past Weekend

This weekend I saw Shopgirl since it’s become all to apparent to me that I’m semi-obsessed with Claire Danes for some unknown reason. I thought the movie was good, although kinda slow at points. Jason Schwartzman was pretty funny as the loser suitor trying to win over Claire’s character. The only real problem I had with the film is that all of the characters seem underdeveloped. Actually, Jason’s character seems to be the only one who I understood where he was coming from, and saw a real progression…Thoughts?

On Saturday I dressed up like a bumble bee. Bzzz!

I haven’t seen the film yet and I don’t know if I will because everything you just said about it was exactly how the book was. Slow with no character development. Shame too because LA Story is one of my favourite films; I think Steve Martin is brilliant and hilarious, he’s just gotten a bit…jaded maybe in his old age.

I’ve heard good things about that film, I should check it out!

I have to agree w you laura. Jason Schwartzmans character was the only one that really came to life. maybe it was because he actually had things to say. I thought claire and steve martin barely said anything in like an hour. And there were way too many slow moving zoom in, zoom outs and slow motions. Beh. Still made me way sad anyways.

i really liked it though i thought i shouldn’t. i thought it was weird that she got totally nude and steve martin never even unbuttoned one shirt button. it was a little too neatly wrapped up and i was a little bothered by the movie’s concept that a lonely-girl-in-the-city’s only fate is to find a Man, any man, whether he’s 60 something or suggests you use a baggie for a condom–

but she is absolutely gorgeous. and it was somehow good about being a lonely girl in the city.

I thought the movie was really sad…despite the cheery ending. Steve Martin’s writing is just beautiful and his sense of humor (as a writer) so subtle, understated and observant. I know the critics are going ga-ga over Danes’ performance and I am afraid they are right, she is “luminous,” la de da. My problem was that the movie got a little corny towards the end, and the obvious awkwardness between the leads when it came to the sex stuff. Also my friend (who is personally familiar with this psych issue) thought the whole depression angle to Danes’ character was treated too lightly…Schwartzman belonged almost in a different film. He was good but too hyper and his story also made me feel SAD because he reminded me of some losers that I used to date myself. :-(
But can we please talk about Claire’s Sexy librarian outfits? My, what beautiful clothes she wears! All made by Marc, I suppose…

she looked really fab at the London premiere:

…and she just found out her BF in American died. Sad.

it’s kinda scary how good she looks in these photos. when i saw her do that dance piece she was RAIL THIN. I guess that’s how skinny you have to be to photograph well. lord knows what Nicole Richie must look like in person.

I agree with jk, the book was a bit slow, and honestly I don’t think much was going on in it. When I read it though, I constantly pictured Claire Danes as the main character (I think it was written for her, but I didn’t know that at the time), so I’m going to end up seeing it just cause that makes me feel cool. That and I just can’t seem to stop liking Claire Danes

my girlfriend and i saw the movie, and laughed histerically (and loudly) during jason and claire’s first date. the movie had somehow tapped into almost every guy we had ever dated. the sweet, creative, lost poor boy… who inexplicably makes you feel nice while at the same time borrowing money. i thought he was the only developed character as well.

you’ll also notice that his scenes don’t have that awful overbearing, overdramatic score. the score and voiceovers were part of an overall push to make the movie have some grand meaning, instead of just letting it be. i thought claire was perfect however, wonderfully charming and awkward.
