Jews Gone Wild

Ms. Natalie has gotten into some hot water from the Jewish community while on the set of her new movie, “Free Zone,” filming in Jerusalem. According to reports, she and her Israeli co-star, Aki Avni, filmed a scene in which they kiss beside the Wailing Wall, the most sacred spot in Judiasm where casual contact between the sexes is forbidden.

Observers of the sacreligous event ran Portman and Avni off the set but were allowed to return to shoot the sceen later on. Director Amos Gitai had not sough out prior permission to shoot the scene by the wall.

The Futureheads

The Futureheads

Oh, last week we saw Kasabian and The Music at Irving Plaza. We’ll write about it at a later time.

In totally unrelated news, is Renee Zellwedgie now dating Damien Rice? News at 11.

Jude and Sienna, Still On

Despite the perpetual rumors that Jude and Sienna are on the rocks, it appears as though things are just peachy keen in the world of “you’re so gorgeous–no YOU’RE so gorgeous!” Our spies caught a glimpse of the picture-perfect duo walking down Wooster Street in SoHo today–Jude’s arm wrapped around the soon-to-be Mrs. Law (II).

Shows, Music, Blah Blah Blah

We realize part of the purpose of this site is to talk about the shows and events we attend, but sometimes we get busy with real life (ie- job, friends, family) that we don’t have time to be up at 2am writing about the show we just saw. Seriously, back in the day (circa 2001) when we were still in college, we had far too much time on our hands and would obsessively post. But since this site doesn’t pay our bills, sometimes we put it on the back burner. After years of being chained to our laptops, we now leave all the up-to-the-minute and heard about it before you even knew it existed posting to the kids and professionals.

The Redwalls

Ok, back to business…We didn’t realize when we starting writing about The Redwalls that they had a fanatical following. We assume this following is made up of 19-20-year-old girls, but hey, if you aren’t in that age group, please let us know.

A while back, we listened to a bunch of the songs the Redwalls had on their site, which sounded really impressive for such a young set of kids. That was part of the reason we made a point of going out to see them live when we heard about their show at the Mercury Lounge earlier this month. The crowd was packed–made up of industry people and a few wide-eye young women in the front row. The room that had that stodgy and sedate quality that occurs when people from the label and booking company fill up 85 percent of the venue. Work-affiliated boredom, if you will. But as soon as the band started playing, there was a palpable shift in the mood of the room–all of a sudden there was energy, excitement, and perhaps even approval from the crowd.

The Redwall’s music and manner harks back to the music legacies of groups like The Band, The Kinks, and The Beatles. We know that sounds pretty awful, as so many bands rip off those groups and produce less-than-stellar results, but for some reason when the Redwalls play there are no gut-turning feelings to be found. Although their sound is not “fresh,” it is genuine and real.

It is without a doubt that their youth is part of their appeal. The sight of their smooth faces lighting up with enjoyment as they sing their songs and their boyish bodies encased in 60s-style uniforms of tight straight-legged pants, flat shoes, vest, shirts, and blazers of various muted colors and embroidered designs almost makes you want to giggle with glee. It’s like watching life-sized My First Rock Band marionettes plucking their instruments with an earnestness to please their audience. The bob their heads left and right just like how Paul McCartney did on that fateful first Ed Sullivan show. The Redwalls are capable of producing that innocent euphoria that people felt for the Fab Four when they burst on the scene.

The most perplexing thing about this band is trying to figure out why Capitol Records signed them. There’s no denying that they are extremely talented. Their live show is tight and they emit a remarkable amount of energy and professionalism while on stage. Unfortunately, there really is no current market for a band like this. The songwriting is excellent, but too reminiscent of a bygone era. If you like good ol’ fashion pop music, then this is definitely your band…but how many people are seeking young bands that sound like they could have toured with the young Bob Dylan?

Maybe we’re wrong, maybe there are a lot of people who would like to see a group who is continuing this tradition of music. We wish them the best of luck, because it sure has been a while since we’ve seen an up-and-coming band give a live show that was so impressive as theirs were. If you do get to catch them live, you’ll be sure to leave the venue with a good feeling…and you’ll also start feeling a little bit depressed that you weren’t as motivated as these four when you were a teenager.

Gay Messiah?

Rufus Wainwright talks to the Observer about his addiction to crystal meth and subsequent rehabilitation, as well as why he feels he was put on this earth to write songs.

Where You At, Yo?

So where have we been for the last few days? Good question. Well on Thursday we went to the party for the Pirelli calendar. We watched as this year’s photographer Patrick Demarchalier guided the devil in Prada herself, Anna Wintour, around the blow-ups of the photos featured in the calendar.

After we boozed and shmoozed with the beautiful and famous, we headed down to Eleven to hit our birthday party held at Atomique. A good time was had by all as Nick spun the wheels of steel, and there even was a random celebrity sighting–if you consider David Cross a celebrity.

Friday night we attended the afterparty for the designer Zaldy at the SoHo Grand that Geordon and Greg K. were DJing. It was supposedly hosted by Parker Posey, but as a newly minted geriatric, we headed out just as all the fabulous people were arriving.

Sunday we avoided the insanity that was the Chinese New Year parade, but from what we could hear, it sounded like a rip roaring good time.

And finally, yesterday we asked ourselves, “What kind of sick people go to Hooters on Valentine’s Day?” Well, we found out first hand by heading to Hooterville in Manhattan (yes, one exists). Apparently 30-something white guys and large parties of British people go there on the Hallmark card holiday. We had mild chicken wings, curly fries, and a Philly cheese steak. Oh, and also a tummyache. Nothing says “I love you” better than a green pucker face.

Random Stuff

The Lucian Freud painting of Kate Moss sold for 7.29 million USD.

Check out these hot pics of Jarvis Cocker and M.I.A. DJing last week’s MisShapes.

Birthday and More

Yesterday we saw an awesome Chicago band called The Redwalls at the Mercury Lounge. We will talk more about them later this week.

Also tomorrow I’m celebrating my birthday at my friend Audrey’s weekly rock party, ATOMIQUE. It takes place at Eleven (152 Orchard St. between Stanton and Rivington) and starts at 10pm.

Usually it’s held in the downstairs lounge, but due to renovations, we’re moving on up to the upstairs lounge which is bigger and fancier!

Special guest DJ is Nick Catchdubs, hot off his joint with M.I.A. at the Knitting Factory, and I will be spinning pop and Detroit rock sometime during the night.

Beers and Well Drinks 1/2 off for the first 2 hours. NO COVER.

All Miked Up

A reader pointed out to us that Jack White will talk to Mike Wallace on “60 Minutes” tomorrow night at 8pm EST. It will probably be as bad as the interview they did with Bob Dylan.

Julian + Juliet 4eva

The little gossip birds have been speculating that Julian Casablancas finally tied the proverbial knot with Juliet Joslin this weekend. If you are skeptical about the validity of this, The Moldy Peaches’ Kimya Dawson just happened to attend a wedding this weekend where they danced to Milli Vanilli and then headed downtown to party. Draw your own conclusions.
