Yeah, WHATEVER. Liam Lynch gets in the New York Times.

Liam Lynch

The best way to describe Liam Lynch is “restlessly creative.” A dyslexic, colorblind, insomniac one-man culture machine, he stays up all night making quirky songs, movies, and animated shorts in his home studio and then, when he finally crawls into bed, jumps out and races to the studio several more times as new ideas occur.

Though his output seems limitless, he has become an overnight sensation thanks to a minute-and-a-half-long song, the lyrics of which he improvised as he recorded it. That one-take recording is “United States of Whatever” (a half-spoken parody of the expression “like, whatever”), which has become a funny — but not ha-ha funny — radio favorite in the United States and in Europe, where it hit the Top 10.

Despite this success, however, Mr. Lynch has no intention of leaving his creative nest. “I’m not even going to try to be a rock star,” he said, sitting in front of the computer at his home studio in Van Nuys, Calif. “I like being a rock star by myself, here, at night and having fun that way. I don’t want to have to look good or dress cool, or tour in front of fans, or play a show. I just want to make stuff at home.”

Best known for creating the only show on MTV that consisted solely of sock puppets, “Sifl and Olly,” he is now writing and directing a feature film with one of comedy’s best rock bands, Tenacious D. Mr. Lynch has also just released his first album, “Fake Songs,” on S-Curve Records. A hodgepodge of an album, it includes jokey concepts like “United States of Whatever”; more straightforward songs, which he recorded with one of his fans, Ringo Star, on drums; and uncannily accurate parodies of Bjork, Depeche Mode and David Bowie.

“I think the album might be brushed off as novelty, which is fine,” Mr. Lynch said. “I like that it’s a fun album. I’d rather make someone laugh or feel good about themselves than make them think that I’m more tortured than they are and they can feed off my pain.”

From the Ben Kweller mailing list: “For all you television owners, BK will be co-hosting this
weeks episode of 120 Minutes. Be sure to tune in to MTV2 this Sunday, April
20, to check it out. It starts at 1:00 AM EST, so you now have no excuses.
Be there or be somewhere else.”

From the Division of Laura Lee mailing list:

Hey,

We are sad to announce cancellation of Coachella festival + additional dates,
here is the official statement written by Per Stalberg, vocalist:

Hi!

Per Stalberg, Division of laura lee writing.
I’m very sorry to say Division of laura lee cancels Coachella festival +
additional dates in the U.s.

Due to the fact that I’ve been suffering from grave throat-infection, coughing
for the last three weeks and have been totally feeble in my body. I’ve been
having fever for the last weeks and as I went to the doctor today for the second
time in two days he adviced/ordered me to cancel the trip to U.s. as I need to
recover from my illness, or this will lead to further injuries & I would
seriously risk my health.

I’m indeed very sorry that we need to cancel, not only due to all the fans that
bought tickets to our upcoming shows, but also it feels unfortunate towards my
band comrades Hakan, Jonas & David, as they also were very excited on coming
back to the U.s. on tour & especially excited about Coachella festival, meeting
a lot of new people, receiving new vibes.

We’ll definitely be back in the U.s. and by this fall we’ll record our second
album which will turn out to be The master-piece. Again I’m sorry that we had to
cancel the tour, we’ll be back soon.

I also want to take the chance & say THANKS to all the people that came out to
our shows, bought our records and supported us in amazing letters, emails,
phone-calls, live-conversations, it’s been the year of my dreams.

We’ll recover and come back more powerful than you could ever imagine.

Take care

Per Stalberg, 15.th of April 2003

The question is: Is he sick or is he “sick”?

Jason Von Bondie is starting up his own record label (isn’t everyone in Detroit?). From the Von Bondies mailing list:

In other news, Jason Von Bondie has been very busy starting up his own
record label, In The Act Records, to be run in conjunction with the
aforementioned Dim Mak records. Slated for release soon are the Von
Bondies Peel Sessions (available at our shows coming up) and the
premiere of a certain Mr. David Viner, the most amazing folk-blues
guitarist out there. Hailing from London, Mr. DV is currently touring
with the Soledad Brothers throughout Europe and the UK (visit
www.soledadbrothers.com for dates) and is sure to knock your socks off.
Catch him (and the Soledads, of course) while you can!

No, it’s not an anti-Coldplay song, but Noel “Stops the Clocks.”

Here’s a note to the A&R people: Does your label need a Sigur Ros, Mum, Album Leaf, Godspeed You Black Emperor!-type band? Or do you need another one? Well we found you one: Dirty on Purpose. You might consider re-naming them Dop and telling everyone they’re based in Iceland instead of New York in order to maintain some kind of fabricated intrigue, but it’s up to you.

They are UNSIGNED. 2 guitars. 1 bass. 1 singing drummer (think French Kicks pre-Hugh). 1 female keyboardist. One of the guitarists uses a bow, a la Sigur Ros, but he doesnt have a wonky eye. They’ve got a good live sound, and their look is appropriate for their music. We saw them last night downstairs at the Knitting Factory and thought of you, and how you should check out the mp3s on their site. Because you like music. So to everyone that’s been on our asses about how great Mew is, this one is for you.

We took out our Justin Timberlake Justified album long enough to tell you that Whirlwind Heat’s album, Do Rabbits Wonder? in stores today.

For the unfamiliar — Whirlwind Heat are… noise punk funk? They’ve re-named all the songs on their album as colors… so “Decal: Sticker” (also known as “Decal On My Sticker”) is now called “Tan.” The colors are suppose to convey some kind of emotion or energy associated with the song — and although that sounds pretty pretentious and freshman undergrad-ish, we’ll roll with it.

Produced by Jack White and engineered by Brendan Benson, this labor of love is 100% Michigan. Jack White is obsessed with Whirlwind Heat. (If you look at the liner notes for Elephant the only named thank you is, “David Frozen Swanson” — Moog and singer of Whirlwind. Also Elephant was originally slated with an April 15 release date — which coincided with the Whirlwind release, and they’d end up side-by-side on the record display case — “Whirl” comes pretty close to “White” alphabetically.) Is it the fact that there are THREE band members in the band? (We’re sure it doesn’t hurt.) He’s called them the “new Devo” and we’re pretty sure he’s going to try to make them the princes of the Detroit media empire he appears to be creating.

Ok, so Jack White loves them, should you? Well, yes. If you like off-kilter, distorted, retarded, noisy psycho-jams, then Whirlwind is for you. We think they’re best introduced to the ear as a live band, but if you’re unable to see them on the White Stripes Elephant tour or otherwise, you should definitely pick up Do Rabbits Wonder?, give it a spin, and get informed.

When we saw Hot Hot Heat last week, we were totally freaked out by the opening band, The Sun, for one particular reason. Their drummer is the spitting image of Lester Bangs. Jesus!

IS THIS LESTER BANGS?
